KaMM Center

Website Security Recovery & Restoration

Project Overview

The Center for the Study of Knowledge, Materials, and Materiality — is a non-profit organization focused on research, public history, and digital humanities. The organization relies heavily on its website to present research initiatives, publications, proposals, and institutional credibility to collaborators and academic partners.

Following a major website compromise caused by an outdated plugin vulnerability, the entire website became inaccessible. No functional backup existed. The only recoverable asset was a single archived page retrieved from the Wayback Machine.

Restore Website & Prevent Future Breaches

Goal

Key Objective

Full Website Recovery & Long-Term Security Protection

The primary objective was to:

  • Eliminate the active security vulnerability
  • Recover and reconstruct the entire website
  • Restore the organization’s digital credibility
  • Implement long-term website security protection and monitoring

The project required rebuilding the website structure, layout, and content using only one archived reference page while simultaneously hardening the platform against future attacks.

Key Challenges

The recovery process involved several critical technical and operational challenges:

  • The website had no backup of the website before the breach
  • The only usable reference was a single archived Wayback Machine page
  • Original content, media files, and internal structure were missing
  • The compromised plugin created an active website vulnerability
  • The organization temporarily lost its entire digital presence
  • No firewall or proactive security monitoring system existed
  • Rebuilding the original website design required manual reconstruction of layouts and content

The lack of both backup infrastructure and security hardening significantly increased the complexity of the recovery process.

Our Action Plan

To restore KaMM Center’s website and secure the platform long-term, we implemented a structured recovery and protection strategy.

[ Phase 1 ]

Security Audit & Vulnerability Removal

The first priority was eliminating the active vulnerability to prevent reinfection during reconstruction.

  • Conducted a complete website security audit
  • Identified the compromised outdated plugin as the breach source
  • Removed the malicious plugin and cleaned infected files
  • Updated all active plugins and the website theme
  • Stabilized and secured the hosting environment

[ Phase 2 ]

Website Reconstruction & Restoration

The reconstruction process required rebuilding the entire website ecosystem from a single archived snapshot.

  • Used the archived Wayback Machine page as the primary reconstruction reference
  • Rebuilt all missing website pages manually
  • Recreated layouts, structure, and content to closely match the original website
  • Restored navigation and user accessibility
  • Re-established the organization’s digital research presence

[ Phase 3 ]

Security Hardening & Ongoing Monitoring

The objective was not only to recover the website but to establish a stable and continuously monitored digital infrastructure.

  • Installed and configured Wordfence security protection
  • Implemented firewall protection and website hardening measures
  • Configured weekly malware and vulnerability scans
  • Established ongoing website monitoring and anomaly detection
  • Created a proactive maintenance process to reduce future security risks

Results

The website recovery project successfully restored KaMM Center’s online presence while implementing a significantly stronger security framework.

Website Recovery

The entire website was reconstructed and restored within one week after engagement began.

  • Website fully rebuilt and restored from limited archived references
  • Original design and structure closely recreated
  • Research and institutional content restored successfully
  • Organization regained operational digital presence

Security Restoration

The compromised environment was cleaned and secured through layered protection measures.

  • Vulnerable plugin removed completely
  • Plugins and theme updated to secure versions
  • Firewall protection configured and active
  • Wordfence installed and optimized for monitoring

Ongoing Monitoring

Post-recovery monitoring established a stable and protected website environment.

  • Weekly Wordfence scans show zero anomalies
  • No reinfection detected after recovery
  • Active security monitoring now in place
  • Long-term website maintenance framework established

Business Impact

For KaMM Center, the website serves as the organization’s primary public-facing credibility platform. Collaborators, researchers, and institutional partners often review the website before initiating communication or partnerships.

The security breach temporarily removed the organization’s ability to present research, publications, and institutional work professionally online.

Before:

  • Website inaccessible due to a security breach
  • No active website protection
  • No backup infrastructure
  • Organization lost digital visibility and accessibility

After:

  • Website fully restored and operational
  • Security monitoring system active
  • Firewall and malware protection implemented
  • Stable and protected digital platform established

The recovery restored KaMM Center’s ability to operate, communicate, and present its work professionally online.
